Indonesian-Chinese Martial Arts
Pentjak Silat-Kuntao
|
Pentjak Silat-Kuntao
is a unique martial art based on Indonesian Pentjak Silat and
Chinese Kuntao, Silat-Kuntao is a combination of two ancient
cultures containing a diverse collection of techniques, principles
and attitudes. It is perfect for anyone who has the desire to
learn valuable, realistic self defense skills , while improving
health and fitness. Silat-Kuntao is a rarely seen, highly
sophisticated, and physically effective fighting system from
Indonesia. It is based on physiology, physics, anatomy, and
psychology. The movements of Silat are unbelievably deceptive,
fluid, powerful and swift. It is known for its’ graceful and
almost effortless movements. The beauty and grace of this art
changes like lightening into one of the most effective ways of
self defense. It was not originally taught as a sport, it was for
self defense only. Pentjak Silat teaches awareness, self-belief,
bravery, a quick eye, and the element of surprise.

Amerindo Pentjak Silat System
|
|
The style is composed of
multiple strikes, takedowns, sweeps, joint locks, ground, knife
and stick fighting. This system is a combination of finesse,
application of physics, knowledge of anatomy, and how energy is
directed. The emphasis is on economy of motion and efficient self
defense. It is based upon maximum destructive output with minimum
effort. Amerindo Silat does not require brute strength or speed,
due to the development of awareness and timing.
In this system, the student is not trained to break boards, to
spar with heavy pads on, or to do Kembangan (forms) until they are
bored out of their minds. They are taught to fight to win, fight
to protect their honor, their family, and perhaps their land. Oom
(uncle) Jims’ system is geared for survival fighting and for
developing toughness, not for trophies, belts, or stress relief.
Many masters and grandmasters of different arts admit to its’
lethal validity.

A Brief
History of Guro Besar Jim Ingram
|
Babak Jim W. Ingram was born in
Cheribon, Indonesia in 1930 of Dutch-Indonesian parents and grew
up in Kramat (Nieuwe Laan). His father worked for the police in
Batavia ( Jakarta ),where he grew up as part of the Euroasian “Indo”
community. He started his martial arts training in 1937 when his
father introduced him to a man ( a Djago ) named Bapak William
Loreo. Loreo was a well knowned skilled fighter and trained Oom
Jim in the Kweetang, Tjimande, and Pukulan Kemajoran systems. Jim
Ingram also learned the style of Pukulan Japara from his father.
In addition he has learned “Gelut” (wrestling) and Vitamaen
stick fighting from the Mollucans. Coupled with Oom Jims’ own
experience fighting for his life in the Indonesian independence
war, and as a Dutch commando in the Korean war, he brings much
experience and insight to the martial art world. In 1956 he left
for Holland where he was one of the first to start teaching Silat
in Amsterdam. In 1960 he came to the United States and moved to
Washington state where he began training in his garage. Mr. Ingram
has learned a lot of systems and has adapted them into his own
techniques, he believes no one system has all the answers that go
into creating a human fighting machine to avoid confusion and
politics within the martial art world, he changed the name
of his system to Amerindo self defense system. He believes one
always must learn the best from other fighting systems and teaches
that the day you stop learning is the day you should quit.
